Dengue fever

The best prevention against Dengue fever is vector control by eliminating mosquito breeding sites such as vessels that may accumulate water.

Four preventive measures:

Eliminating mosquito breeding sites:
Indoor breeding sites include trays under refrigerators, vases, and sinks, which need to be cleaned or changed for fresh water on a weekly basis. Outdoor breeding sites include waste tires, and flowerpots, which need to be cleared away. Call sanitation workers or Health Department for assistance.

Wipe out mosquitoes:
Insecticides are hazardous to human health. Do not use insecticides until it is necessary. Wear protective gears such as masks, hats, glasses, long-sleeved clothes, rubber gloves and overshoes when spraying insecticides. Do not contaminate food and drinking water.

Wear trousers and long-sleeved clothes when entering epidemic areas. Use mosquito nets together with bedding. Doors and windows should be equipped with screens. Use repellents when going outdoors.

If any discomfort occurs after return from trips to Southeast Asian countries, seek medical advice and explain itinerary in details to physicians to avoid the disease entering from overseas.
