Prevention and treatment of scrub typhus (tsutsugamushi disease)
Highly risky areas of scrub typhus in Taiwan include:
1.Off-shore islands, such as Lanyu, Lyudao, Penghu, Kinmen, and Mazu.
2.Taitung County, Hualien County and rural areas.
3.Mountainous areas in Taiwan island.
Symptoms of scrub typhus:
Once bitten by tsutsugamushi mites, the outbreak of scrub typhus occurs after an incubation period of ten to fourteen days. Early symptoms includes chilling spasm associated with headaches and lymphadenopathy, followed by rashes, fever up to 39¢J or even higher, stung wounds and eschar appearing on the body. Those with the above-mentioned symptoms after return from highly risky areas shall seek medical treatment immediately.
Prevention
1.Preventive clothing, such as long-sleeved clothes, trousers, boots, and gloves.
2.Once entering into highly risky areas, repellents shall be applied every four to eight hours to avoid being stung.
